Thinking about putting up a fence? Cool! But there’s more to it than just picking a style. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Be a good neighbor: This means knowing exactly where your property line is. If you’re not sure, call a company to measure it for you. Why? Because if you accidentally build your fence on your neighbor’s land, they can legally make you move it!

Talk it out: Before you start hammering away, chat with your neighbors about your fence plans. Listen to their thoughts too. If your fence blocks their sunshine or clashes with the neighborhood look, it might cause problems.

Follow the rules: Some neighborhoods have homeowners associations (HOAs) with fence rules. They might limit the fence height or style, or even forbid fences altogether! Check the HOA rules before you buy supplies, to avoid having to rip your fence down later. Even if you don’t have an HOA, your city or county might have laws about fences, so look into those too.
